Immigration Stories

May 5, 2011 by Admin No Comments »

Watch a clip of an incredible immigration story about one man who came to the U.S. as an illegal immigrant, went to Harvard, and became a successful neurosurgeon.

The video clip, part of “First Look: An Immigrant Story” by Steve Hartman (CBS News), is about “Dr. Q,” a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As a child, Dr. Q crossed the border from Mexico into the U.S. illegally. His first job was as a migrant farm worker. 20 years later, he is a neurosurgeon at one of the most renowned medical facilities in the nation.

Many immigration stories involve tragedy and the harrowing circumstances of families who face living illegally in the US. But whether an individual or a family’s story is one of success or not, immigration is a controversial issue. There are many people who argue that a success story is not justification for being in the U.S. illegally. In the video, Dr. Q. responds to this argument by saying, “I am very thankful for what this country has done for me and the only thing I can do is try to pay it back every day, by every single thing I do.”

What happens to children of illegal immigrants?

April 25, 2011 by Admin No Comments »

Josias Ochoa was born in the U.S. and is, therefore, a U.S. citizen. His parents, however, were in the U.S. illegally, and when they were deported to Mexico, so was he. Wach the video clip from CBS News called Children Of Illegal Immigrants for the full story.

Before the family was deported, Josias Ochoa’s father worked at a bank and his mother was a hairstylist. They had lived in the U.S. for 17 years, and hired an attorney to help them become legal residents. The Ochoa family now resides in San Lucas, Mexico with relatives. Josias says that it’s difficult to attend school in Mexico, because his school work is entirely in Spanish.

Seth Doane (CBSNews.com) reports that almost three-quarters of the children of illegal immigrants are legal U.S. citizens.

Children of illegal immigrants born in the U.S. have “birthright citizenship.” The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) calls these children “anchor babies,” because children of illegal aliens who were born in the U.S. automatically qualify for welfare and other programs. They also have the ability sponsor family members for entry to the U.S. once they turn 21. Learn more about laws governing the children of illegal immigrants.
