In 1993, Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead fame, divorced Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Adams, his wife of twenty-three years. He married Deborah Koons in 1994. They were together eighteen months before he died in rehab in 1995.
Fast-forward to 1997: Koons and Mountain Girl are still locked in a legal dispute over the late Jerry Garcia‘s estate. The divorce settlement between Adams and Garcia included yearly payments of $250,000 to Adams. Before Garcia‘s death in 1995, he‘d paid Adams about $400,000. After his death, his widow cut off these payments, prompting Adams‘ litigation over Koons’ estate planning and management.
Though Koons‘ attorneys argued that Garcia had not been mentally competent at the time of the divorce agreement, the judge in the estate case disagreed. Mountain Girl ultimately agreed to a settlement of $1,250,000.
