How GM’s Bankruptcy Effects a Town’s Fate

November 11, 2010 by Otis No Comments »

Times are tough in this struggling economy, and the factory town of Spring Hill, Tennessee, has seen the full swing of ups-and-downs thanks to its dependence on General Motors.

In the early 90′s, GM built one of its largest and most advanced factories in the small town of Spring Hill, TN. The new facility promised to be a wealth-spring of income for the town, attracting workers from across the country, and increasing the towns population and revenue by leaps and bounds. GM even built a shiny-new town hall for Spring Hill.

A little over a year ago, what had seemed like an impossible and nightmarish scenario for Spring Hill became a reality: GM declared bankruptcy. This once thriving town, full of lives and businesses dependent on the continued success of GM, faced a surreal crisis. Many workers were laid-off while the plant struggled in production. Businesses throughout town took a serious hit as a result. The recession hit Spring Hill especially hard through the failures of General Motors.

Individuals in this situation should turn to a reliable Nashville bankruptcy lawyer for guidance about how to proceed, and what possible legal options might be. The workers from the GM plant in Spring Hill mostly moved away to other opportunities, and many businesses were forced to close their doors as the population and revenue of the town dwindled.

The video below, from Voice of America, details the trumoils of the plant workers and the town of Spring Hill as General Motors began to enter bankruptcy. Since that time, the plant has vastly reduced its workload, and is currently in the midst of rehiring 400 idle workers to begin production of General Motor’s four-cylinder engines for its mid-size crossover vehicles. For a town that boomed and then crumbled, this could be the start of another up-swing. But this time around, the townsfolk may not be so all-invested and optimistic.

Real Houswife Talks about Bankruptcy on The View

October 13, 2010 by Otis No Comments »

Teresa Giudice may no longer be one of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, having recently gone on the popular daytime television show The View to talk about her current state of financial ruin.

Teresa and her husband Joe filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, attempting damage control of their in-debt situation that had been spiraling out of control. In their filing, they claimed to owe $11 million, $7 million unsecured, with Joe and Teresa‘s annual income as $79,000.

Despite these claims, their court appointed trustee has accused the couple of withholding particularly valuable assets. These include hiding interests in a pizza parlor, laundromat, and Teresa’s own clothing line and cookbook. Anyone in such a precarious position should have sought advice from a reliable Albany bankruptcy attorney before attempting to defraud the courts.

“Court papers show that the Bravo reality TV star and her husband, who filed for bankruptcy protection last fall, are facing a lawsuit to prevent them from taking advantage of the debt discharge available to individuals under the Bankruptcy Code. According to Chapter 7 trustee John Sywilok, tasked with rounding up the couple‘s assets and distributing the proceeds to creditors, the Giudices allegedly concealed key documents about their finances and business transactions.” (cited from the Wall Street Journal)

Here, Teresa goes on The View in an attempt to clean her name of the bad press it’s been getting in regards to the allegations associated with her bankruptcy. While the economy has hurt many individuals, Teresa blaming the economy for her recent woes is just her avoiding responsibility for their frivolous spending.
