Attorneys Weigh In on McCourt Divorce Trial

The above video features footage of both attorneys in the McCourt divorce trial that is taking place in Los Angeles. The trial is receiving a lot of media coverage as the ownership of the L.A. Dodgers will be decided by the proceedings. Frank McCourt contends that he was sole owner of the team while Jamie McCourt has claimed that she did not have sufficient counsel when she agreed to sign a marital property agreement in that granted that excluded her as a team owner and that there are multiple and conflicting versions of the agreement. The couple signed the agreement in 2004 when they purchased the team and moved from Boston to L.A.
Here Stephen Susman, attorney for Frank McCourt speaking to the press claims that Jamie McCourt’s motive is that she is desperate to hold onto ownership of the team because it makes her a “instant celebrity.”
David Wasser, Jamie’ McCourt’s attorney counters in his remarks to reporters that the intent of the marital property agreement was to put joint homes owned by the couple in Jamie’s name as a nest egg for the whole family not to exclude her from team ownership. Wasser also goes on to say that he does not foresee a speedy resolution, but believes the property disputes will continue well past September.
With legal pundits weighing in from CA to Massachusetts and LA and Boston divorce lawyers giving their expert opinions, and the ownership of a major sports franchise hanging in the balance, it will be interesting what the resolution will be.
