Driving Safe in Winter Weather, Tips for Navigating West Virginia Roads

January 3, 2012 by Otis No Comments »

Inclement driving conditions always pose a danger to West Virginia drivers and their passengers. Rain, wind, and fog cause travel difficulties throughout the year, but winter driving has its own frightening hazards.

Driving safely during the winter season in Charleston and throughout the state depends on staying alert and making good choices. Tips for navigating stormy weather include the following:

  • If the weather is poor and the roads just as bad – consider not driving at all.
  • Use your seat belt every time and insist passengers do the same.
  • Do not drive distracted, impaired, or fatigued.
  • Avoid use of your cell phone – even with a headset. Never send text messages while driving.
  • Use snow tires, keep them properly inflated, and do not mix radial tires with other types of tires.
  • Drive slowly in snow. Allow extra travel time, be cautious and courteous of other drivers, and leave abundant space between cars at all times. Never tailgate.
  • Use even pedal pressure to negotiate hills – extra gas can spin the wheels.
  • Never slam on your brakes. Apply steady, even pressure and slow down in a cautious manner.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half-full and your car in good working condition. Check lights, windshield wipers, and defroster before heading out in snow.
  • Keep emergency supplies in your trunk, including flares, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a blanket, a reflective poncho, battery jumper cables, a shovel, and road salt.

You never know when bad weather conditions will cause an accident or force you to the side of the road. Driving in bad weather is challenging, and accidents occur with every storm in West Virginia. But being prepared and driving safely help avoid accidents and injury no matter what the season.

If you live in Charleston or the surrounding area, an experienced West Virginia personal injury lawyers can help get fair compensation to help cover medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more for financial and emotional assistance.

A Troubled Family: Domestic Violence in Texas

December 27, 2011 by Otis No Comments »

Domestic violence in Texas?and anywhere in the United States?is a serious and disturbing social, legal, and community problem.? Acts of violence or threatened acts of violence occur every day behind closed doors in families of all economic and racial backgrounds.? When an adult or child is threatened or harmed, we all suffer the consequences.

Both men and women are victims of domestic violence, but most are women.? The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) estimates 85 percent of victims are women.? According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, 142 women were killed by their male partner in 2010, 111 women died at the hands of a loved one in 2009.

In Texas, Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) counsels family violence offenders in a group setting.? A BIPP offered by the Domestic Violence Institute of Texas gives instruction and offers reflection for male batters to recognize and control their behavior.

Recently approved for Probationary Accreditation by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Community Justice Assistance Division (TDCJ-CJAD), this program aims to aid the larger community by deterring battering on an individual basis.

A child witnessing violence between parents or caretakers is the single strongest factor for transmitting violence from one generation to the next, according to NCADV.? To stop domestic violence in the future, it has to be addressed now.

If you are the victim of battering, of if you know someone who is, contact a family attorney in Fort Worth or elsewhere in Texas, or call the police.? Help yourself, help your children?and help the future.

Offering comprehensive and compassionate representation on divorce, child custody, domestic violence and other matters, the Fort Worth divorce attorneys at provide strong legal advocacy to clients.
